As work continues on Future Youth Zone, we are making sure we are spreading the word as much as we can!

Following on from CEO Gavin Evans, we are delighted to introduce you to our second member of staff, Marcel Andrew. Marcel’s role, as Youth and Community Engagement Worker, is to spread the word of Future Youth Zone across the whole borough.

He’ll be attending various events, visiting schools and community partners to let everyone know what is on the way for Barking and Dagenham’s young people. We caught up with Marcel to ask him a few questions!

Q- Could you tell us a little about yourself?
A- Hi my name is Marcel I am 32 and I live in Barking and Dagenham. I grew up in Lower Clapton, Hackney and I have been living in Barking and Dagenham for 10 years.

Q- What did you do before joining Future Youth Zone?
A- Before I joined Future Youth Zone I was a Youth Worker in Hackney. I moved to Barking and Dagenham and started working as a Behaviour Mentor in schools, and PRUs across Barking and Dagenham and London.

Q- What made you apply for your job?
A- I applied for this role as I feel Future Youth Zone will change the lives of young people in the borough and I wanted to be apart of the great change that is yet to come.

Q- Tell us a little about your role…
A- My role is to engage with the youth in the community, potential partners, community organisations and schools. I aim to develop and expand Future Youth Zone’s Young People’s Development Group and also spread the word about the Youth Zone.

Q- What does the Development Group do?
A- The Young People’s Development Group are a set of young people who make choices and decide what works best for the young people at the Youth Zone. They also take part in loads of fun activities, festivals, shows and residentials across the country. This group helps develops their communication skills, confidence and self esteem and also is good for their CV. When the Youth Zone opens, the young people can become young volunteers which also can lead to potential working opportunities.

Q- Can young people still join the group?
A- Yes, young people can still join. As long as they are between 12 and 19 all is good! All they need to do is contact me or send a request to join online on our website.

Q- What do you think Future will bring to the community and, most importantly, the young people?
A- Future Youth Zone will offer a way out for the young people of Barking and Dagenham. At the moment many parents and members of the public complain to me about young people having nowhere to go and nothing to do. Future Youth Zone will create an opportunity for young people not only to socialise in a safe environment but to also learn new skills and develop skills they may already possess with the help of fully trained and qualified facilitators. Future Youth Zone will be life changing for the people of Barking and Dagenham.

Q- How excited are you for Future to open?
A- I am really excited and cannot wait untill the Youth Zone is open. I am so glad that I am apart of the team and apart of the change that will shape Barking and Dagenham’s youth for years to come.
