Keeping Young People Safe

Keeping young people safe is our number one priority at Future Youth Zone. We want young people to feel free to relax, be who they are and enjoy themselves without any worries. Our measures ensure young people won’t just feel safe at the Youth Zone but also BE safe.

Please take a look at our safeguarding policy here.

We have a zero tolerance approach towards weapons at Future Youth Zone – ZERO.

The Youth Zone operates a wand scanner on entry and regular bag searches take place during all senior sessions. There are also regular checks of the outside area at Future Youth Zone.

Our staff are fully trained in incident response and take part in regular security drills.

Respect is one of our core values at Future Youth Zone.

Our team works positively with young people to ensure our simple code of conduct is understood and the Youth Zone high standards are maintained.

We praise and reward young people who:

  • Respect the building
  • Respect the staff
  • Respect each other
  • Respect yourself

If a reminder about our code of conduct has not been effective, a cooling off period might become necessary. We will explain the reasons to both the young person and their parents or carers and set a date for a meeting with them before they return to the Youth Zone.

Future Youth Zone has a positive relationship with local police and welcomes officers on regular visits, demonstrating a clear partnership. We have a data-sharing agreement with police so we can be informed if any high-risk young people are assessing the Youth Zone.

All staff and volunteers have undergone enhanced DBS checks and receive extensive training before working with young people. This centres around the management of conflict, youth work values, the importance of positive relationships with young people and what to do in emergency situation.

OnSide Youth Zones and Future Youth Zone has been present in East London since 2015 enabling us to identify key factors of risk before we even opened our doors. Many of our workers and volunteers recruited from the local community as we find they understand local issues and challenges best. Staff can record, review and report all incidents and communicate efficiently by walkie-talkie.

The building

Future Youth Zone is extensively covered by CCTV. This is well-publicised throughout the Youth Zone and all young people will be required to submit a photograph of themselves upon becoming a member.

The Youth Zone’s front door can also be remotely operated so access can be controlled when needed with those on reception having a clear sight of the entrance and across the Youth Zone itself. Our reception staff also play a key role in establishing friendly and positive relationships with young people built on trust and respect.

Future Youth Zone has developed strong partnerships with a range statutory and voluntary organisations. We are implementing clear pathways and referrals to partners who support young people to exit youth violence/gang involvement.
